Latest Stuff in October
The last few months I have been so focused on the business side of my music a lot. All the projects on the fire etc. Lately though my personal playing has been a greater part of my focus a lot.
In addition to teaching I have been getting from Tom Hess which never ceases to blow me away how good it is I got an opportunity to take web cam lessons from Greg Howe (I posted a vid of him in an earlier post below). When I saw he was giving the lessons I and considered that really he is probably closest to where I want to go stylistically I had to jump in. Common success teaching always points to the benefit of modeling your heroes or people that are doing what you want to do, achieving what you want to achieve. Understanding how accomplished people think is a large key to that process. So what a better way to learn fusion than to spend some time with Greg (the very best in my mind) and find out how he approaches the instrument. I have spent about 3 hours with him now and I just heard myself on a recording and I can't believe it really. OK I can but I am pretty pleased with the progress. I am glad he is a good teacher as well as player, not to mention he is a cool person.
A little more about Greg:
"As one of the most unique and respected guitarists in the world, Greg Howe has paved his way to legendary status. He is one of the most influential guitarists of our time and has been sought after by some of the biggest stars in the world such as Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, NSYNC, and Enrique Iglesias. Shrapnel Records owner and infamous guitar connoisseur Mike Varney said, "I consider him to be one of the greatest guitarists of all time". Greg burst onto the scene in 1988 with the release of his critically acclaimed debut album simply entitled "Greg Howe", bringing a sense of funk and groove to the table that was sorely needed at a time when post Yngwie Malmsteen players of the "shred guitar" genre were pursuing the dramatic neo-classical vein. Greg's second solo album (1993's "Introspection") set the tone for what would eventually become a series of eight fresh forays into the mosaic of funk, fusion, rock, jazz, and blues evolving along the way with each new release while developing what has now become his highly recognizable signature voice."
So now I am getting killer input from Tom and Greg both. I am pouring lots of money into this. My lessons I am giving are easily covering the expense. Its worth every penny. I am pretty excited because Tom is going to start teaching/mentoring me from more of teacher business perspective in addition to general music career perspective.
So its all pretty cool. Sometimes I ask why I did not do this years ago. Then I think no. I have always been in God's hands. I just am grateful that now this part of my life is really moving. My goals as a player and professional are more realistic to me now, that they will be realized. It just a matter of time now.
Anyway, Julia and I are doing well. We went and saw her son play tonight in the band competitions. I like that she is very involved with her son to see this stuff. Its pretty cool really.
Well there is more happening but I am tired of typing. I think I will go do some XBOX Live for a few......kill a few people, blow up people, run them over with tanks and go to bed happy....LOL!!!
Peace,
Randy
